No Defences

In 1980, founding member  Dik started the band Toxic. Originally Dik sang and played guitar along with friends Sid on guitar, Bev on drums and James on bass. In 1982, Iggy (first bass then vocals) and Woody (drums) joined  with Bev switching to guitar and Dik to bass. James became a poet and occaisionally gigged alongside. They recorded a demo with one track appearing on Crass Records Bullshit Detector 2- Tradition of Slaughter. At the end of 1983, Andy took on the drumming and Toxic was renamed No Defences. Another track, Wall in the Mind, appeared on Bullshit Detector 3.

Dik stated this about the name, "Never choose a name by committee! That's what we did and we never were really happy with it. It was supposed to be about not having defences around yourself to others, rather than being a slightly bland anti-nuclear name, which it always sounded like. In some ways I almost preferred our old name of Toxic even though we dumped it as it seemed too spikey-top/glue-sniffing punk."

Early in 1984 they moved from Essex to South London and became part of the squat scene there. Over the next two years they played gigs with many bands including Slave Dance  (Andy drummed for them too), Crucifix, Annie Anxiety, Crass, Karma Sutra and Chumbawamba. Most were in and around London but some further afield, including a tour with Chumbas in October 1985. On stage they had a slide show of lyrics and relevant images,  operated by Tod.

Towards the end of 1985, they began recording at Southern Studios for an album on the Crass Records label. Five tracks (total time 31:10) were recorded, with Pete Wright producing, but the album was never finished. Around that time, Iggy also decided that she wanted to leave No Defences, and without her involvement the general consensus in the band was that it was no longer worth continuing.

With the original  2" tapes lost, only rough-mixed studio cassettes remained.  After 30 years, Sean from Demo Tapes Records persuaded all five ex-band members to release it on vinyl.  The music was remastered, and cover and 12-page booklet were constructed from archive material. This process took 18 months and the album was made available in March  2017.

"Tradition of Slaughter"

The peeling skin he drags behind him
They groan and cry for help
But there is nothing I can do
These pallid ghosts with faces like masks
Walk slowly past me towards the stream
They're all crouching at the water's edge
Trying to quench a never-ending thirst
Condemned by a tradition of slaughter to die

Reality

Kids are taught that they live in a perfect world where everything is fine and everyone will lead on to healthy, successful lives. The worst part about this false Utopian ideology is that the children are tricked into believing these lies as truths. Unknown to them, it is nothing compared to the harsh truth that is Reality. Reality chose their name based somewhat on the above ideas. In 1981, four kids from school (Headley 'Veng' Harnett on guitar and vocals, Dick, Gullet and Neut on bass) began the band as Alternative Imbecile.

Soon after, the band recruited Louise who was from a different town and changed their name to Reality. The band began gigging around 1981 and 1982, playing a highlight event for Chelsea in King's Lynn and supporting Flux of Pink Indians in Norwich. The band depended on burrowed equipment, and like most 'Anarcho' bands, met with a lot of violent interruptions during several gigs. Reality also played a cover of 'The 1970's have been made in Hong Kong' by Flux of Pink Indians for their live set.

After being together for only a year, the band released their first, very underrated and best release titled 'Blind to the Truth'(E.P.) all on their own, bypassing the demo stage, during 1982. Unfortunately for the band, Louise lost interested and left the band, followed by Neut who was replaced by Sam on bass. Reality had to shorten down to a trio, but they kept on going anyways, continuing to gig and create new material. In 1983, Sam was kicked out of the band because of personal issues, and replaced by Pete on bass. Reality was now ready to record their second 7"

Connections with Conflict led to Reality releasing the 'Who Killed the Golden Goose?' single on Mortarhate in 1984. In an interview Steve said " It was about people who loved money and then fell on hard times. Kind of like a modern parable! It was one of a couple songs where the lyrics were written by friends; kind of democratizing the band, letting other people who weren't in bands get a look in. Another example was later on we always let one particular friend come on stage and sing 'Acceptable Death Loss' as part of our encore. He loved it."

Around 1984, the band added a lead guitarist, and the band continued to play until around 1985. Soon afterwards, the band began working on a new album, but for some unknown reason, it never happened. The last release was a demo recorded in 1984. The continuing disillusionment of the 'Anarcho' scene around the mid-eighties led the the unfortuante demise of Reality.

Something that bothers me about this band are the tracks 'Acceptable Death Loss' and Death to Morality'. If you follow the way they are listed on the 'Blind to the Truth' E.P. then you would see that  the overground compilation 'Anti-Society' took the track 'Death to Morality' and titled it 'Acceptable Death Loss'. this is just a thought, I am not sure what went one.

"Nato"

Spending all our money
on a useless cause.
No representation in
a paranoid Clause.

Nato: Bombs and weapons.
Nato: Deformed babies.
They wont stop with a cold war 'cos
what they want is war with the pact of Warsaw

Defending our country but
not defending us...
They'll keep us from the commies
but not from radio-active dust.

One mad general
is all that they need.
Make the peasants
lie down and bleed.

Sadists in uniform are
far above sin
Hello Ronald Reagen
Come on... Welcome in...

One day a fuse will blow
and then our computers will show
non-existant missiles on their way
and it's the end of humanity today.

Nato: Bombs and weapons.
Nato: Deformed babies.
They wont stop with a cold war 'cos
what they want is war with the pact of Warsaw

Nato: Bombs and weapons.
Nato: Deformed babies.
They wont stop with a cold war 'cos
what they want is war with the pact of Warsaw

President Reagen will not apologize
and his ego will grow in size.
A nuclear theatre war will be encurred.
So much for NATO, it's just turd...

Just turd, turd, turd, turd, turd.

"Death of Morality"

The sea is red with the blood of our cousins
dying in pain in the name of humanity.

But if it makes money it's conveniently forgot.
The pain and suffering of a dying whale!
But if it makes money it's conveniently forgot.
The pain and suffering of a dying whale!

They kill them for lipstick
that's morally corrupt
But then nobody
really gives a fuck!

The pain of a mother
dying beside her young
before her blubber is sliced from her flack

Well if it makes money it's conveniently forgot.
The pain and suffering of a dying whale!

They kill them for lipstick
that's morally corrupt
But then nobody
really gives a fuck!

They kill them for lipstick
that's morally corrupt
But then nobody
really gives a fuck!

"Acceptable Death Loss"

They ram a needle
up its arse.
What's in the syringe
you must not ask...
Dieing minutes later
with milky blood-shot eyes,
another possible nerve gas
has been devised.

At Porton down: They love pain and fear.
Their acceptable death loss is thousands a year.
At Porton Down: They love war and strife.
They manufacture war with an animals life.

They don't give a damn as
the innocent animals die.
While the whole wide world
just turns a blind eye.
Nerve gas was too nice,
you died too quickly.
and now for their war games
they want something more sickly.

At Porton down: They love pain and fear.
Their acceptable death loss is thousands a year.
At Porton Down: They love war and strife.
They manufacture war with an animals life.

At Porton down: They love pain and fear.
Their acceptable death loss is thousands a year.

Slaughter of the Innocent

After Swiss Grand Prix Winner Hans Ruesch wrote the book 'Slaughter of the Innocent' about animal rights in the late 70's, three inspired animal rights activists started band with that same name. The band consisted of Sue on bass, Tiff on drums, Steve on guitar and Melita joining on lead vocals by the end of 1986. The bands members were inspired by the first wave of punk in the late seventies, but it was the 'Anarcho' scene of the early 80's that led to an even greater inspiration driven politically. Slaughter of the Innocent played their first gig in 1986. By the end, they only did 20 gigs.

The first song they ever wrote was called 'Bloodlust Scum'. Once Melita joined, the content of their lyrics increased in quality. One month after their first show, the band entered a recording studio to record their 'Silent Orders' demo tape. It sold 300 copies, and received a positive review by Mick Mercer in 'Melody Maker'. Some of the topics covered in the lyrics were witches, persecutions of women and the holocaust. Around this time Sue started a fanzine and ran Ray of Hope Distribution. Sue also began joining hunt saboteurs (destroying buildings or stopping operations involved in animal cruelty)

'Anarcho punk' helped revitalize direct action towards animal cruelty. This led to hunt sabs, which was how the band first met. Most of the members were based from Sussex and had been in bands previous to Slaughter of the Innocent. In the summer of 1987, Steve left the band and was replaced by Matt from the Brighton punk band Why? In the fall, the band entered the studio once again to record tracks ment for a split 12" on Meantime Records and a compilation 7" on Words of Warning Records. Unfortunately, none of the tracks were released because the band broke apart and split in 1988.

Sue said this about the breakup:" Can't really remember but there was a fair bit of tension and I wanted to move up to London so we called it quits after a couple of years together".

Sue: "Anarcho punk was about challenging the norm, not accepting things the way they were just because that's how it's always been".

I have no lyrics for this band. I have one photo, but wont be able to upload it for a while. You might recognize this band from the track 'A New Dark Age' on the overground compilation.

Dominant Patri

Another of the lesser known bands but just as good, Dominant Patri only released a three track demo called 'Heroes Glory' and played only around a dozen shows before splitting up, but their close association with Karma Sutra, Stunning lyrics and great music was enough to bun them into 'anarcho punk' history. Dominant Patri were formed around 1982 and were vocalists Chris Jones and Kate Packwood, Steve Richards on bass, Paul 'Bugsy' Hugget on guitar, and Gary Pratten on drums. The name means 'Dominant Fortler' and comes from the latin 'In Nomine Patri' meaning our father which comes from the church. They chose it because they felt that the church was a dominant, corrupt part of society. One member of the band said 'The name says how the pope, priests and, bishops dominate the people's minds while they are at school'.

'Heroes Glory' was recorded on June 18th, 1983, at Ludon's Midland Road Studio, on a three track. The band wanted to be tuneful and show more of an earlier punk sound, in an effort to avoid the new thrash sound that was starting to come up. They were also trying to avoid the 'anarcho' label but their connection with Karma Sutra made sure they were. Their first gig was at a wine bar and was in their opinion the 'best gig' they had ever played(10-15 gigs in all). not even a year after the band had formed, Chris's drug addiction and crazy personality caused the band to split. several of the members went on to play in a different band.

Any lyrics would be greatly appreciated in the comments section(I may have all of Heroes Glory) I have a picture of Kate to put up on top but wont be able to post it for a while.

The Snipers

The Snipers formed in late 1979 in Oxfordshire. The band compromised of Russel Bowers on vocals, Dave 'Bungi' Hounslow on guitar, Steve 'Wacker' Harris on bass and Mark Taplin on drums. They were inspired by Crass to start a band, even though none of them could play and none of them had any equipment(what they did find was crap, such as a Colombus bass, homemade guitar, half a drum set and a 15 watt practice amp). They were going to originaly be called The Sinyx, but changed it to The Snipers upon finding out that it had already been taked. Early practices were done at Russel's parents garage.

It took at least ten months of writing songs and practicing before they played their first gig at a Christmas party in the Victory Hut, a community centre from Brize Norton(a leftover hut from World War II). The Snipers then recorded their first demo in Bourten, Gloucestershire possible around 1980. They shared it with their friends and sent one to Crass. Crass pulled their track 'War Song' for Bullshit Detector 1. A second Demo was recorded, three of those tracks ended up on their 1981 7" 'Three Piece Suite' for Crass Records, and the other three on a compilation they were to release later on during 1982.

The 'Spirit of an Old Age Anthem' tape was released in 1982, and was the last thing the band released. They played their last gig at the Wapping Anarchy Centre with Failing Parachutes in support, a band that is included in their compilation tape. Mark eventually moved to Telford, and this led to the band becoming less active, and ultimately, their demise. They had no interest in replacing Mark, since the band was made out of friendship.

The following song 'Hate' I have no idea where it came from.

'Hate'

Some people seem so full of hate/But they'de better learn before its too late/They
need escapes to take their blame/Can't make out that they've been tamed (Chorus) It

never did no-one no good/But you thought that it would/Hate breeds hate/That's a fact/
It all mounts up until impact/ Anxious minds don't see straight/blind rage, its a
human trait/ Gotta take it out on some pooe sod/ Politician, Paki or maybe God//(CH)//
Hate don't answer noones whys/Just stirs up trouble and spreads lies/Hate for you
and hate for them/Hate for the whole system////

"Nothing New"

I see so many words
predicting gloom now,
posters on the walls
around my room now,
every time around
the stakes get higher
who's to take the blame
but there's no buyer
Chorus
I know what you're thinking
when your looking at my eyes
I know what your thinking
When your telling me your lies
I see so many words
predicting gloom now
posters on the wall
around my room now
it wasn't like this when
you captured my mind
the threat seemed so distant
I must have been blind
Chorus
I see so many words
predicting gloom now
posters on the walls
around my room now
enjoy what you got
while you can
it's all sewn up

we've got no choice
you try your best
but they drown your voice,
you scratch their backs
and they'll stab yours
they don't give a damn

Anarka and Poppy

Anarka and Poppy began in 1981 as a guitar/vocal duo(jane and Sean) as Nihilistic Insurrection and later joined by Stoko on drums(who replaced Neil in '82). They were also known as P.O.P.P.I.E.S. which stood for the anarchist collective "Prisoners of Pain and Power in every State". They played their first gig only six days after forming with Disorder in Liverpool. At that point they changed their name to Anarka and Poppy(Anarka meaning anarchy and Poppy meaning red in the black/red revolutionary flag).

The band started their own 'New Birth' label and recorded their 'All that is Shattered' demo in 1982 at Twilight Studio in Salford and sold it at gigs. By this time they had three additional members(Shaun Ellis on keyboards,Yoh on bass and Christine on tambourine and backing vocals). In 1983, They recorded the "Take it for Life"(recorded straight onto a four-track)tape released by Happy Apple Tapes.

In 1984, after getting in contact with Josef Porta of the Mob, Anarka and Poppy where given the chance to record an E.P. for All The Madmen, or so they thought. They recorded three tracks(their best work) but in the end All The Madmen changed hands(or had financial difficulties) and the single was lost and never released. The Spiderleg label was also talked to for putting the single out, but nothing came out of it also. Disillusioned by the failure to release the single and other factors, Anarka and Poppy split in 1984. In 1985, Anarka and Poppy renamed their label Happy Apple tapes and reformed as a six piece with Sean(guitar),Jane(vocals), Neil(drums), Paul(bass), Shaun(synthesizer) and Christine(tambourine)  to record a second demo in April of 1985, but they split again for good before it could be recorded.

There is a rumor that they are going to reform and finally release the E.P. that was supposed to get put out on All The Madmen, but it is only a rumor.

"If It Dies we Die"

It's an easy lifestyle they say but you don't experience others pain,
we're all exploited we're all in chains, do you think that they're not watching you you are in range.

There's only one earth and we're all on it, we all inhabit it we are part of it.

If it dies, we die...

You know our world is dying, that means us too, we're dying every day, they're killing me and you.

If it dies, we die...

You have the potential to at least shout, for the home that is so dear, do you really care?
Whatever happens to this earth affects you, so let's keep our world in safe hands and keep the sky blue.

If it dies, we die...

For your children and your children's children give them many years to come,
let them see the natural earth instead of something made by man.

If it dies, we die...

Fallout

Even though Fallout was anti-anarcho(they were socialists), they was still connected to the scene. They hardly played live, missed several gigs, and went through some line up changes. It is almost impossible to find any information on this band, though former members being Rob Headache(drums), Rob Brainache(bass vocals, later guitar), Steve(bass) and John Eyeache(bass) have posted small comments about Fallout on other blogs and videos. There was rumor of an album that was supposed to be released on Mortarhate, but it never happened so The material was lost and never heard. One former member of the band has the album, but has yet to upload it.

Here is a quote I got from a member of Fallout:

"when SMW disbanded Charlie (the singer) went on to form Fallout-starting off as a kinda solo idea but eventually Fallout was made up of some of the members of SMW back in its fold-Rob on bass, another Rob on drums,Chalie singing and later still me on bass.I played with them at gigs in Brum/Coventry and London.I play bass on the album 'we wont be your fucking poor' and also on an unreleased Fallout album thats been sat in my loft for the last 30 years! lol. cheers."

     Fallout's first E.P. was a self release E.P. from 1981.

1982 saw the release of Fallout's second E.P. titled " Salami Tactics"

In 1983, Fallout released their very underrated "Home Killed Meat" 12"

In 1984, Fallout released their last record titled "Butchery". In 1985, two tracks were released and put into two different compilation albums. One being " We Won't Be Your Fucking Poor" and the other being "Here We Go". It is a shame, because Fallout was a very good band and very underrated. Hopefully one day more information, pictures and possibly a retrospective release will surface.

"Passing Judgement"

Mrs do-gooder, always had her act together.
She was so clever, knocked you over with a feather.
She has got it all worked out, what parents lack, why kids freak out,
and who, who are you passing judgement on today?

Mrs Social Worker, Mr Welfare Care,
what did you learn at college, that will ever help you here?
Telling real people where they've gone wrong,
you've got to make the system work to prove that you belong.

And Who, who are you passing judgement on today?

You're so understanding, I bet your hairdo's everlasting,
double decker, family wrecker, see a doctor, go one better.
You've got the keys to all the locks, like Valium and electric shocks,
and who, who are you passing judgement on today?

There's more to you than meets the eye, like the lives you judge as the years go by,
like the lives that you dismiss, "This one's violent, he's a thief".
Your way of living must be right,
I think I've Almost seen the light,
all that knowledge, all those books,
judging people by their looks,
protect him from his alter ego,
you're the expert you should know,
all that training in your head,
you must know how good lives are lead.

Who, who are you passing judgement on today?

Six Minute War

Six Minute War was a band from Hackney, London. They were a breathe of fresh air with very good, original music. They were known to share the stage with The Sinyx and Flux of Pink Indians. They were very D.I.Y. and produced three E.P.'s with the smallest budget possible by using A4 paper instead of a record sleeve. They had a slogan that read: " D.I.Y.not E.M.I.

Their first E.P. titled " 33.3 RPM" was recorded on February 1st, 1980, at theOZ Studio. It was released during April of that same year. There are two version of this. One was released on the Six Minute War label, and the other one was not and has different inserts. The band financed the record themselves with the "Pay no more than" attitude.

In 1980, a split cassette was released between Pitfall and Six Minute Warning. They also appeared in two fanzines, one being "No More Than".

After the first E.P. a second one was recorded during July of 1980. The song "Nurses" was recorded on July 12th, and the rest on July 20th. It was called "More Short Songs". It was recorded in the same studio. The line up throughout the bands life was Egg on vocals and bass, Dog on bass and vocals, Chaz on guitar and vocals and Dave on drums.

One final E.P. was released in 1981 called "Slightly Longer Songs". One of the weirdest things about this band is that they were against Crass's anarchist views.

The band had political lyrics, but they did not believe that an anarchist society would work because of man's natural want of power and always wanting more. They spoke against Crass in fanzines and in their songs. Shortly after this E.P. Six Minute War turned into Fallout. Crass once scolded Flux of Pink Indians for playing with six Minute War. Take it from these men, "Anarchy's a Farce!".

"Camera"

So you want anarchy, anarchy's your way, but who in the long run will have to pay. you like to call it freedom to do what you want, freedom to shoot a bloke if you think - wrong. Anarchy - freedom? anarchy's a farce. you don't pay for anarchy it's the working class. destroy the power of wealth and replace it with strength, power for the strong instead of the rich. social disorder, no rules to be broken, when you've got social disorder, life ain’t such a burden...

"Strontium 90"

went to Harrisburg for my holiday, Pennsylvania USA, saw a nuclear reactor like we have at home another fast breeding Chinese Syndrome. Scientists said it was fine, but on the 28th of march 1979 the cooling pump failed and it all went wrong; and three mile island became a bomb. Radioactive gasses escaped into the air, but nobody bothered, nobody cared. are you worried, do you share my fear that Harrisburg could happen here?

"Strike"

when you go on strike you hold the country to ransom, it's again - the national interest, but the boss's always hold the workers to ransom cause when you go on strike its against their business interest. So they call in the troops, army scabs are number one, call in the troops when your only weapons gone. They call in the troops, army scabs will do your jobs, they'll soon get things done for a few extra bob. maximize on profit that's all they want to do, exploit the working class and that means you. but you won't question their dominant position, you don't care about the slums that people live in. You can't see the wood for trees, everything you're told you believe Yes they've got you eating out the palms of their hands, it may be salt now, but soon it will be sand...

"Progress"

civilization, we've reached it at last, millions of people wiped out with a blast they don't care if we don't believe, they've got a place in the shelter, got the ace up their sleeve. progress must be achieved. then people of the world have been deceived. They take the gamble, death is the price, they've got a place in the shelter, they're alright, a neutron bomb, what a device, to protect us from communism and keep us free. leaves all the buildings, kills you and me, so they're able to develop a new economy...

"Labeled"

he got caught on his first attempt, second time he was innocent, but the copper was bent. If ever there was a scandal, robbery or vice, he had done it once so he must have done it twice. He was labeled deviant by the people on the street, labeled deviant by the copper on the beat. He couldn't get a job he had a bad reputation, he was labeled yob, social castration. He soon came round to their idea of him, labeled deviant, another life in the bin. So don't tell me that they are all the same-don't tell me their parents are to blame, exploitation and murder, starting at school, this system is the biggest criminal...

"Nurses"

It's written in their rules to put missiles before hospitals. Generals before doctors, soldiers before porters, mercenaries before maternity grants, bullets before heart transplants. Nerve gas before inoculation, who cares about the starving nations? Trench blood before sterile clean, tanks before kidney machines. Nuclear power is what we need, let the bloody peasants bleed, start another wages freeze, bring the country to its knees, use another media trick, forget about the old, forget about the sick. Bring back hanging, bring back the cane, let's make Britain great again. (?)

"Youth Culture"

Create a youth culture with the help of the media, classify it, put it in a box. Destroy its meaning to create another fashion, take away its feeling, take away it's action, Classify our ideas, that's how you make your money, more young ideas destroyed by capitalist economy. You create Mods and Rockers and put them to war when they don't even know what they’re fighting for. You believe your way is right, and you're prepared to fight, can't you see that's what they want you to do, shave your head and they'll classify you. So don't take part in the next fashion, say what you feel and take some action.

"Protect & Survive"

Turned on the T.V. to see a drama, all that was on was Panorama, told you how to stay alive, something about protect and survive. Worrying facts I began to hear, but the final message was pretty clear, our governments so out of touch - say shelter buildings cost too much Take two doors and nail them to the wall, cover them with earth, and get food for all, crawl inside and wait 14 days, listen to the radio and don't forget to pray.. Will this fighting ever cease, all I ever wanted was peace.

"So Sad"

Maggie are you going? Is your son? Would your daughter? Would you go to the front line, would you pull the trigger? You feed us so much shit, but we won't eat it, you treat me like a whore but I wont fight your war.

"Sell Out"

Just cause you sold out, I don't have to sell out too. Just cause you're the system I don't have to follow suit. Just cause you say punk is dead, now you've made your fortune - CBS, Small Wonder is there any difference. We want music for everyone, what is wrong with that? Because we want to change the system you try to say it's crap. Cause the system gave you money, you don't hate it any more. Well punk must be dead cause you're not bored and you're not poor. You've got a 5-Star flat in Chelsea, you've forgotten what its like. You're divorced from reality, but you don't care any more, because the systems sucked you in.

"The Weathermen"

The weathermen are coming over the rise, can you see the manic gleam in their eyes. Youth Movement One, sure is fun 1969 and it's just begun. Sirhan Sirhan and the Moscow Gang in March Greenwich Village went up with a bang. Bernadette Dohrn, loves the Viet Cong. "Dig It" – "Wild" The Weathermen's Song. You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows... They went underground and couldn't be found. Up went the workshop, dig that sound. Having Wargasms 'till the wind died out. Compulsive violence is what they did shout and – You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

"Kung Fu Killers"

Build another Church build another Social Club build another slaughterhouse or another Country Pub. Fairy Liquid, kind to hands, building up the soap suds. Ariel washes whiter, but that can't hide the blood and guts, but Ariel's the best these days, but even that can't wash away the blood. They pin their hopes on whitewash, but that can't disguise the murdered. Red, White and Blue - that does the trick. Again they hide behind the flag, killing in God's name really can't be that bad. So build another place to pray, another place to run away, killing seems to be OK when it's done in God's name.

"Last Drop"

The days of the rope are coming back. One hour twitching with a face turned black, strong men weep – the keepers of the law. See a last meal all over the floor. Pierrepoint's sacred realm – at the depths of Hell. It was he who faced them last. Crying in the death cell. Their misdeeds now to be punished. Hanging by the neck, but the killing of one man will never bring another one back as the eyes bulge out of his head and the twitching fades away Another corpse hangs dead and the hypocrites pray. They pray for a world peace and they pray for a world without crime. Yet they still kill thousands in their aimless wars and get away with it every time. As guts and blood pour over the land, as banners fly and hymns are sung. The victors take justice swiftly to hand and so-called criminals are hung, but if they murder for God and Country or kill in a bank robbery they are one and the same to me. One and the same to me. Some talk of the rope's return, some people never learn, but if the rope will quench their righteous thirst I know who should be hung first.

The Cravats

What do you get when you mix Jazz with Punk and Rockabilly? You get the Cravats. Formed in 1977 in Redditch. The Cravats eventually came to a steady line up of The Shend on bass and vocals, Robin Dallaway on guitar and vocals, Dave Bennett on drums and Svoor Naan on saxophone. By the time they got Dave on drums, the Cravats had already released a single in 1978 called Gordon/Situations Vacant with another drummer named Ethos who left soon after it.

Watching The Cravats at a gigs was an interesting sight. One person who saw the band said that they would use coffee percolators, theremins and tape loops held on to microphones. There was also a man named "Mr. H" that would sit on a chair facing the audience watching a huge television while reading the paper. At the end of their set, they would play "I Hate the Universe" while Mr.H destroys his couch, and the band would go crazy.

With the help of John Peel, the band released several singles during the late seventies, until finally releasing their debut album "The Cravats in Toy Town" during October of 1980. This band was definitely ahead of it's time.

After releasing several more singles, The Cravats recorded and released the "Rub me Out" single on Crass Records. Soon after, The Cravats "split" and turned into The Very Things(several other bands came out of this band). It wasn't until around 1985 that they returned with the "Land of The Giants" twelve inch single before disappearing again but claiming never to split.

The Shend became an actor soon after, and The Cravats once again reformed to release "Seance" in 2006. Recently, the band has reformed again, but the only original members left are The Shend and Svoor Naan(who's name is Richard London). They are now active once again playing gigs.

"Live for now"

WE'RE STILL LIVING IN THE MIDDLE AGES
WHAT WE'RE DOING NOW WILL FILL THE PAGES
OF THE HISTORY BOOKS OF THE SEVENTIES
BUT WE'RE NOT TIME ENCAPSULATED ENTITIES

A SPLIT SECOND OF TIME
CAPTURED IN RHYME
JUST GIVE ME WHAT YOU'VE GOT
AND WE'LL LIVE FOR NOW

TURN OUT FROM THE PAGES OF THE HISTORY'S TEXT
I DONT EVEN KNOW WHATS COMING NEXT
I'M JUST LIVING FROM DAY TO DAY
BUT IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER AS THE SECONDS TICK AWAY

YOU SPEED AROUND THE CITIES AND YOU MAKE YOUR MARK
YOU'RE BURNING SUICIDAL FLARES IN THE DARK
CONFORMISTS ARE THE KILLERS AND THEY'RE WAITING FOR YOU
SO DON'T BE DIFFERENT WHATEVER YOU DO

"Off the Beach"

NAILING BATONS TO THE CLIFFS
ROPE WITH CHILDREN DOWN BEHIND
FACING CRUMBLING ROCKS CALLED MORTGAGES
TELL THE CHILDREN THAT WE'RE OFF THE BEACH
COULD JUST LEDGE HERE COMFORTABLY
JUST WATCHING THE SEA AND SAND
CAN'T SEE UP TO THE TOP OFF THE CLIFF
BUT I KEEP ON KEEP ON CLIMBING UP
TELL THE CHILDREN THAT WE'RE OFF THE BEACH

"Precinct"

WATCHING BAGGY BOYS IN THEIR STARCHED WHITE SHIRTS
MARCHING UP AND DOWN LOOKING AT THE SKIRTS
PEOPLE BEING RUN DOWN LOOKING AT THEIR SHOES
BUYING LOADS OF RUBBISH THAT THEY KNOW THEY'LL NEVER USE
DOWN THE PRECINCT
DOWN THE PRECINCT
SPENDING ALL YOUR
MONEY ON A NEW TOWN
DONT VOTE FOR ME'CAUSE I'LL PULL IT ALL DOWN NOW
LUMPS OF PLASTIC ART NOUVEAU HANGING FROM A WALL
PEOPLE TURN A BLIND EYE AS THE MISSING CHILD BAWLS
THE MAN WHO IS SECURITY REMOVES HIS HAT TO PONDER
WITH HIS SHADES HE WONDERS IF HE LOOKS LIKE PETER FONDA

DOWN THE PRECINCT
DOWN THE PRECINCT
SPENDING ALL YOUR
MONEY ON A NEW TOWN
DONT VOTE FOR ME'CAUSE I'LL PULL IT ALL DOWN NOW
POSTERS IN THE WINDOW TO CLAIM THE MODERN AGE
BUT I THINK ITS HYPOCRISY TO KEEP US IN A CAGE
A SOCIETY THAT DOESN'T CARE SHOULD JUMP INTO THE FIRE
AND NOT BUILD CONCRETE EPITAPHS TO SOME RICH MANS DESIRE

DOWN THE PRECINCT
DOWN THE PRECINCT
SPENDING ALL YOUR
MONEY ON A NEW TOWN
DONT VOTE FOR ME'CAUSE I'LL PULL IT ALL DOWN NOW
DOWN THE PRECINCT
DOWN THE PRECINCT
SPENDING ALL YOUR
MONEY ON A NEW TOWN
DONT VOTE FOR ME'CAUSE I'LL PULL IT ALL DOWN NOW

"Rub Me Out"

LAW IS THE PENCIL,THE UTENSIL
THAT YOU USE,TO DRAW THE LINE
INDENTIKIT FOR THAT NEW OUTFIT
THERE ARE MANY NAMES ON THAT LIST
AND ONE IS MINE
HOW YOU WISH THAT I WASN'T HERE
THERE ARE WAYS
TO MAKE ME DISAPPEAR
TURN THE PAGE AND IT'S ALL CLEAR

RUB ME OUT

ERASE MY VOICE
REDUCE MY FREEDOM OF CHOICE
KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE BUTTON
SO YOU'RE READY TO DELETE
I'M NO PERMANENT FIXTURE
YOU CAN TAKE ME OUT OF THE PICTURE
YOU CAN ALTER THE MACHINE
SO THE ERROR WON'T REPEAT
HOW YOU WISH THAT I WASN'T HERE
THERE ARE WAYS
TO MAKE ME DISAPPEAR
TURN THE PAGE AND IT'S ALL CLEAR

RUB ME OUT

THEY MUST BE CORRECT
WITH WHATEVER THEY SELECT
I'M THE BUZZ OF INTERFERENCE
ON YOUR SYSTEMS CASSETTE
WHEN I'VE LEFT WITHOUT A TRACE
LIKE A SPOT ON YOUR FACE
THERE'LL BE OTHERS TO TAKE MY PLACE
OTHER DEFECTS
HOW YOU WISH THAT I WASN'T HERE
THERE ARE WAYS
TO MAKE ME DISAPPEAR
TURN THE PAGE AND IT'S ALL CLEAR

RUB ME OUT

Who is The Enemy? An Anti War Protest(tapes 1 and 2) Wheatabrain-5

These two tapes from the 80's, with no info other than the track list and title, include a lot of rare tracks from the Anarcho Punk scene that have never been uploaded on the internet before. Included are two old, very rare songs by The Commitee that sound more like their older stuff such as 'Ring the Bell' from the Overground compilation(might possibly be from that same demo). Old demo songs by Political Asylum and the Instigators, also tracks by Sanction, Toxic Shock and two live tracks by Andy T from an unknown date and place. There are also some bands on here that I have never heard of before. Unfortunately, some of the tracks and band names look smudged and are hard to read, but I'll try my best to spell them out. If you have any info on these tapes(corrections on smudges), please post in the comments. I just realized that Wheatabrain was the name of one of the guitarist/vocalists from Alternative.
